Better terms from your suppliers

In a product business, inventory is usually the biggest check you write, and the terms on that check decide how much cash you have left for everything else. This kit gets you better terms, fewer surprises and more cash left in the business.

Why terms come first

Terms are usually worth more than price

Say your next order is $100,000. Your supplier wants half when you place it and half before it ships. You've paid the full $100,000 before a single unit reaches your warehouse.

Get 30% at order and the rest 30 days after it lands, and the same order at the same price needs $30,000 on day one. A 3% discount on that order is worth $3,000. Better terms are worth a lot more, and suppliers often give them up more easily.

From the guide

How I negotiate with suppliers

  1. Compare landed cost, not unit price. The unit price is the number they want you looking at. What matters is what it costs to get one unit onto your warehouse shelf. Two quotes that look a dime apart can be 50 cents apart once they land.
  2. Let them name the number first. When you ask for terms or a price, ask what's possible before you say what you want. If you open with a target, that's the best you'll get.
  3. Pay on time, every time. It's the cheapest leverage you'll ever buy. When you need a rush order, a price hold or better terms, your payment history is the whole argument.
  4. Always have a second quote. Even if you never use it. Knowing what someone else would charge changes how every conversation goes, and it's your backup if a production run fails.

What founders say

From founders who've worked with me

We were about to place a $400,000 inventory order on a 12-week lead time that would have put us 3 weeks from running out of cash. Adam caught it when our cash flow forecast said we were going to be fine.

It was three emails back and forth, and he never asked me for a dollar. We split the order, moved to a second manufacturer, and never had the problem.

I've paid consultants who took three months to tell me what Adam told me in one call. There's no warm-up. You send him your numbers, he tells you what's broken and what to do first.

Our cash flow improved by just under 25% in less than two weeks. The ROI on that single call made it the best investment I've ever made for my company.
